Dr R.N. Sharma
(1924-2025)

In Memory of Dr R.N. Sharma

Dr Ram Nath Sharma, Chairman, MTMH passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in the early hours of May 22nd, 2025. He had celebrated his 101st birthday on April 11th this year. He was born in 1924 in Lyallpur of Punjab Province. His higher education was from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. He joined Bird & Co after graduation and then, Tata Steel as Agent in 1949. He rose to become Chief Mining Engineer for the entire Tata Steel Collieries Division. He was seconded to Govt. of India on lien by Tata Steel following the nationalisation of coal mines. He was the first CMD of BCCL (1973) and retired as Chairman Coal India in 1982.

He subsequently returned to the Tata Steel family to head the Tinplate Company of India Ltd as MD from 1982- 1984. He served as VP, RM & Administration from 1984 – 1987. He had a second tenure as MD, Tinplate Company from 1987 to 1993. He was Advisor to MD Tata Steel from 1993 to 1997.

He was a founder member of Jamshedpur Cancer Society and was associated with MTMH from 1975. He became Chairman, MTMH in October 1994 and remained its guiding force right till his demise. Deeply committed to bringing cancer care to the people of Jharkhand, he was instrumental in bringing in the latest technology and services to MTMH. Patient care was foremost in his mind, and he guided the hospital through all its upgradation and improvement with a single-minded focus of improving facilities for cancer treatment.

All of us who were fortunate to have known him and be guided by him were struck by his foresight and vision and keen intellect. Long before people half his age were getting acquainted with Artificial Intelligence (AI), he was reading up on its application in medical science and sharing information with us. Despite the high positions, he had held as part of his illustrious career, he remained a very down to earth, humble person, easily accessible and ready to share his vast knowledge with all who approached him for advice.

He leaves behind a loving family- sons Ravi and Deven, daughters- in- law Shakti and Anjali, grandson Vikash and his wife Kanika and granddaughter Naina.

His memorial service held on May 24th brought forward an outpouring of tributes, of the many ways he had touched lives across corporates, social organizations, family and friends. There were personal anecdotes, messages from organizations he had guided over years and a palpable grief of what the world lost.

At MTMH, we will remember him as our guiding light as well as our benevolent patriarch. May the Almighty grant him eternal peace.

In Remembrance!
